Brussels: Six dead in the OXY tower fire, construction site sealed off

Six people died in a fire that broke out Tuesday at the renovation site of the OXY tower, located on Place De Brouckère in the heart of Brussels. The tragedy occurred while workers were carrying out renovations in the building. Emergency services found the victims' bodies in an elevator shaft. Two other workers also suffered severe burns and were treated by emergency services.

The search operations are now complete. Belgian authorities are continuing to identify the victims in order to inform their families, while the two injured remain hospitalized. The construction site has been sealed off to preserve evidence for the investigation.

An investigation is focusing on the possibility of an accident.

The labor inspectorate, which handles workplace accidents, has opened an investigation to determine the precise circumstances of the incident. At this stage, the theory of an accident is favored, although no definitive conclusion has yet been reached.

Several technical investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire and verify compliance with safety regulations on the construction site. Authorities will also have to determine whether any equipment or organizational failures contributed to the tragedy. This disaster is one of the deadliest construction site accidents in Belgium in recent years.
