British Prime Minister Andy Burnham wants to pursue a more ambitious rapprochement between the United Kingdom and the European Union. He defended this approach during a meeting with the President of the European Council, António Costa, held Sunday evening before his trip to Ukraine.
According to Downing Street, the Labour leader believes London needs to be "bolder" in rebuilding its relations with the EU27. He specifically wants to use existing cooperation in defense and security to develop broader partnerships.
Military cooperation as a starting point
The United Kingdom maintains close ties with several European states on military matters, despite its departure from the European Union. The war in Ukraine and new threats facing the continent have reinforced the need for coordination between London and its partners.
Andy Burnham was in Kyiv to co-chair a meeting of the "Coalition of the Willing." This first visit to Ukraine since taking office at Downing Street also allowed him to reaffirm Britain's commitment to maintaining a central role in European security.
A summit eagerly awaited to revive trade relations
Since Labour came to power in 2024, London has also been trying to improve its trade relations with the European Union. However, negotiations are progressing slowly and causing frustration on both sides of the Channel, particularly regarding British expectations.
Andy Burnham and Antonio Costa are now focusing on the upcoming UK-EU summit, scheduled before the end of the year. This meeting could allow for expanded economic cooperation without formally jeopardizing Brexit, a politically sensitive issue for the British government.
