Germany: Pro-Palestinian demonstration banned at Buchenwald memorial

A German court has upheld the ban on a pro-Palestinian demonstration planned for Sunday at the Buchenwald Nazi concentration camp memorial. The judges ruled that the gathering risked undermining the dignity of the victims of the Nazi regime, thus validating the decision made beforehand by local authorities.

The organizers, members of the "Keffiehs at Buchenwald" association, will ultimately have to gather in the neighboring city of Weimar. Their initiative had sparked considerable controversy in Germany, with several political figures deeming it inappropriate to organize such a demonstration at a Holocaust memorial site.

The association behind the project states that it wants to pay tribute to the victims of fascism and denounce current conflicts, particularly in the Middle East. It has also criticized the management of the memorial, citing a disagreement over the historical interpretation of the site.

The Buchenwald concentration camp, where tens of thousands of people perished under the Nazi regime, is one of Germany's main memorial sites. The court ruling comes amid heightened sensitivity surrounding the use of these sites for activist purposes.
