Two drones were detected Thursday evening over the Mechernich military site in western Germany. The security center at this Bundeswehr installation immediately alerted the police, who went to the scene and opened an investigation.
According to several German media outlets, agents from a private security company observed a total of six overflights between Thursday evening and Friday morning. Military authorities have not released any further information about the origin of the aircraft or the objectives of these incursions.
A depot housing components of the Patriot system
The Mechernich site includes an underground depot of nearly 30,000 square meters, located 130 meters below ground. Equipment, spare parts, and certain components of the American Patriot air defense system are stored there.
This incident comes two days after the discovery of a drone carrying an explosive device at Leipzig Airport, a hub used for transporting military equipment. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt suggested a possible "hybrid attack," without naming anyone responsible. A meeting of the National Security Council was held on Friday.
