The social network X, owned by Elon Musk, has announced that it has appealed to the Court of Justice of the European Union to challenge the €120 million fine imposed in December by the European Commission. This penalty was levied for several violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA).
The Commission accuses the platform of, among other things, modifying the system for awarding blue ticks, now reserved for paying subscribers, as well as shortcomings in advertising transparency and independent researchers' access to its data. The investigation was opened at the end of 2023.
A first sanction under the DSA
X denounces an "incomplete" investigation and claims that his rights to a fair trial were not respected. For its part, the European Commission indicates it is prepared to defend its decision before the judges in Luxembourg.
This is the first fine imposed on a platform under the DSA, making this procedure unprecedented. Furthermore, Brussels is continuing its investigations into other aspects concerning X, notably within the framework of a separate inquiry related to content generated by its artificial intelligence assistant.
