A U.S. federal judge on Friday sentenced Patrick Byrne, former Overstock.com executive and ally of Donald Trump, to pay $1,7 million in punitive damages to Hunter Biden for defamation.
The case dates back to 2023, when Hunter Biden filed a lawsuit against Patrick Byrne, accusing him of lying during an interview. Byrne claimed that the former US president's son had solicited a bribe from the Iranian government in the fall of 2021, allegedly to pressure his father into releasing some eight billion dollars in frozen Iranian assets.
Patrick Byrne is no stranger to the Trumpist sphere. After Donald Trump's defeat in the 2020 presidential election, he denied the validity of the vote and funded initiatives aimed at contesting the results.
The federal judge presiding over the case ruled Friday in favor of Hunter Biden, awarding him $1,7 million in punitive damages.
