Removing pesticide residues from drinking water could represent an annual expense of between several billion and 57 billion euros. This estimate highlights the potentially colossal cost of the treatments needed to meet more stringent health standards in the face of the proliferation of molecules and their metabolites.
Contamination primarily stems from runoff and infiltration of substances used in agriculture. Once present in groundwater and waterways, some molecules prove particularly difficult to eliminate. Local authorities must then modernize their infrastructure, close water intakes, or blend different sources to distribute compliant water.
Preventing pollution rather than funding its cleanup
The proposed figure reignites the debate on how to share the cost between consumers, local authorities, and manufacturers of pesticides. Several million people in France consume water each year whose quality is compromised by pesticide residues or nitrates, according to information presented to the National Assembly.
New European regulations strengthen the monitoring of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and PFAS in groundwater and surface water. However, treating existing pollution remains more expensive than limiting discharges at their source. Behind the environmental challenge, therefore, lies a major economic and political question: whether pollution cleanup should continue to be primarily funded through water bills or be financed more by the sectors responsible for the contamination.
