Storm Goretti: the English Channel experienced extreme gusts and widespread power outages

After a turbulent night, it's time to take stock this Friday morning as Storm Goretti moves back towards the North Sea. While Normandy was the hardest hit overnight, the wind is still blowing very strongly across the Hauts-de-France region, with gusts reaching 80 to 110 km/h along the coast and up to 90 km/h inland. Numerous showers are still crossing the northern half of the country, sometimes accompanied by sleet, in a noticeably cooler atmosphere.

Gradual lull but return of cold weather to the mountains

As the afternoon progresses, the wind weakens considerably across the west of the country, where sunny spells gradually return. However, unsettled conditions persist in the northeast and in the regions between the southwest, the Massif Central, and the Alps. In the eastern mountain ranges, snowfall resumes above 800 meters, signaling the return of more wintry weather. Temperatures remain mild, ranging from 5 to 8°C in the north and 9 to 14°C in the south.

The evening promises to be cool, still windy in places, and marked by a series of showers. In the higher elevations, the snow level sometimes drops as low as 500 meters, while the humid and unstable air maintains a very wintry atmosphere for the end of the day.
