Île-de-France: a slight increase in air pollution in 2025

Air quality deteriorated slightly in 2025 in the Île-de-France region, according to Airparif's annual report. Nearly a quarter of residents were exposed to pollution levels exceeding the thresholds that will come into effect in 2030, a development attributed in part to weather conditions less favorable to the dispersion of pollutants.

This increase, however, is still considered temporary, within a context of overall long-term improvement. For the past twenty years, concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter have decreased significantly in the region, although this trend is slowing.

Pollution remains a health concern.

Despite these advances, air pollution remains responsible for approximately 8,000 premature deaths each year in the Île-de-France region. Some heavily trafficked roads, such as the Paris ring road, remain particularly exposed, with persistent exceedances of regulatory limits.

Although the limit values for fine particulate matter were met in 2025, levels remain above the recommendations of the World Health Organization. Airparif therefore emphasizes the need to continue efforts to sustainably reduce population exposure.
