Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa stated that discussions were underway with Israel for a security agreement including an Israeli withdrawal to the 1967 lines. In an interview with the Anadolu Agency, he asserted that negotiations were continuing, despite significant obstacles.
According to the Syrian leader, the main difficulties stem from Israel's desire to maintain a presence in certain territories, particularly around the Golan Heights. Damascus nevertheless maintains that it wants to reach a compromise that will bring lasting stability to the region.
The Syrian president thus mentioned a first step involving a security agreement, potentially based on the 1974 disengagement lines, before considering broader discussions on the status of the Golan Heights. He rejected, however, any recognition of Israeli sovereignty over this territory.
In a particularly tense regional context, marked by regular airstrikes and military incursions, Damascus is attempting to prioritize diplomacy. Ahmed al-Sharaa even presents this phase as a "historic opportunity" to turn the page on conflicts and revive a dynamic of stability in the Middle East.
