In Nice, the new mayor, Éric Ciotti, is already breaking with his predecessor, Christian Estrosi. He has decided to abandon the Nicolas Sarkozy plaza project in front of the future police headquarters, an initiative announced in 2025 by the previous administration.
“Not while he’s alive,” declared Éric Ciotti, dismissing outright the tribute Christian Estrosi had planned for him, a man he considered a close friend. This symbolic reversal illustrates the persistent political rivalry between the two men and a clear desire to redefine municipal priorities.
Instead, the new mayor favors a more memorial approach. He supports the proposal from associations of victims of the July 14, 2016 attack in Nice, which aims to dedicate this space to the 86 people killed in this attack that deeply affected the city.
This highly symbolic choice accompanies the upcoming delivery of the police headquarters, scheduled for October 2026, and confirms Éric Ciotti's desire to place his mandate within a security and memorial framework, in a clear break with the legacy of his predecessor.
