Jean-Luc Mélenchon has expressed his confidence for the 2027 presidential election. The Bouches-du-Rhône MP believes he can overtake the National Rally candidate in the first round, or even eliminate him from the race for the Élysée Palace altogether. This ambition, declared on Sunday, contrasts sharply with current polling projections.
The 2022 precedent as an argument
The firebrand politician cites the 2022 election to justify his optimism. He points out that at the time, Marine Le Pen held a twenty-point lead over him in opinion polls. Yet, the gap narrowed considerably at the ballot box, to the point that the far-right candidate nearly lost her seat. Today, Jordan Bardella enjoys a similar advantage in the polls against the LFI leader.
This statement comes as the presidential camp and the left struggle to define a common strategy in the face of the rise of the National Rally. Mélenchon is counting on a campaign dynamic similar to the one that allowed him to finish third in 2022, less than two points behind Marine Le Pen. It remains to be seen whether the political context of 2027 will be as favorable to him.
