US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to Sweden this week to participate in a meeting of NATO foreign ministers, before making an official visit to India, the US State Department announced Tuesday.

This tour comes amid strained relations between the United States, NATO, and India under the presidency of Donald TrumpThe American president has repeatedly criticized European allies for their insufficient military spending and has also imposed high tariffs on India.

Marco Rubio will stop in Helsingborg on May 22 to participate in NATO discussions. According to the State Department, he will emphasize the need to increase defense investment and strengthen burden-sharing among alliance members.

The US Secretary of State is also scheduled to meet with representatives from the seven Arctic nations: Canada, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland. Discussions are expected to focus on economic and security interests in this strategic region.

After his tour of Northern Europe, Marco Rubio will travel to India from May 23 to 26. His itinerary includes stops in Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi.
