This Monday, November 11, 2024, the French president Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met in Paris to commemorate the 106th anniversary of the 1918 Armistice. This symbolic ceremony, also marking the 120th anniversary of the Entente Cordiale, was an opportunity for the two leaders to celebrate Franco-British friendship.

After meeting at the Élysée Palace early in the morning, Macron and Starmer discussed several international issues, including the war in Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East. According to the Élysée Palace, the two leaders reaffirmed their determination to support Ukraine for as long as necessary and to work with regional partners to restore peace in the Middle East. They also agreed to strengthen bilateral security cooperation, with particular attention to combating human trafficking in the English Channel.

The two heads of state then laid a wreath in tribute to historical figures Georges Clemenceau and Winston Churchill, before going under the Arc de Triomphe to rekindle the Flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The ceremony, marked by the British and French national anthems, also included a parade by the Republican Guard, in the presence of veterans from both countries.

Keir Starmer, who will continue his day by inaugurating a reconstructed trench at the Great War Museum in Meaux, stressed the importance of Franco-British friendship, saying he was honored to pay tribute to the soldiers who fell for freedom. For his part, Michel Barnier, the French Prime Minister, recalled on social media the shared history between France and the United Kingdom and the importance of this alliance in meeting future challenges.

Finally, this meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the future of Franco-British relations in a post-Brexit context. The two leaders expressed their desire to strengthen cooperation, particularly in the areas of security, defense, artificial intelligence, and environmental protection. The next bilateral summit, planned in the United Kingdom in 2025, should constitute a new step in this renewed partnership.
