The United Nations welcomed on Saturday the announcement of a temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine and a large-scale prisoner exchange, unveiled by the US president. Donald Trump.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he welcomed the planned truce from May 9 to 11 and the proposed exchange of 1,000 prisoners for 1,000 between Moscow and Kyiv.

In a message posted on the social network X, Guterres praised American efforts to facilitate the agreement and affirmed his full support for its implementation.

The UN chief also renewed his call for "an immediate, complete, unconditional and lasting ceasefire" as a first step towards a "just, lasting and comprehensive" peace, in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.

On Friday, Donald Trump announced on his Truth Social platform that Russia and Ukraine had accepted this three-day truce as well as the exchange of prisoners.

"Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly and hard-fought war," Trump wrote, adding that discussions were continuing to end the conflict.
