Iran has unveiled the outlines of its latest peace proposal to the United States, stating that it includes reparations for war-related destruction, the withdrawal of US forces from near its territory, and an end to hostilities throughout the region, including in Lebanon.
According to Iranian state media cited by Reuters on Tuesday, Tehran is also demanding the lifting of economic sanctions imposed by Washington, the unfreezing of Iranian assets frozen abroad, and the end of the blockade imposed by US forces in certain strategic areas.
This proposal comes as a fragile ceasefire continues to hold after several weeks of strikes by the United States and Israel against Iranian and allied targets in the region. Despite these military operations, Iranian officials maintain that the country retains most of its military capabilities.
According to an Iranian source cited by Reuters, Washington has shown some openness regarding the partial release of frozen Iranian funds and certain civilian nuclear activities. However, the United States continues to refuse to grant an exemption to the oil sanctions imposed on Tehran.
The new Iranian initiative also appears to aim for a broader regional de-escalation. State media are referring to a halt to fighting on "all fronts," particularly in Lebanon, where tensions have risen sharply since the start of the conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
These discussions are taking place in a particularly tense diplomatic context, just hours after the statements by the American president. Donald Trump claiming to have suspended a planned attack against Iran in order to give nuclear negotiations a chance.
Despite the signs of openness displayed by both sides, significant differences remain, particularly on economic sanctions, the American military presence in the Middle East, and the guarantees demanded by Tehran regarding its nuclear program and regional security.
