US special envoy Jeff Landry arrived in Nuuk on Sunday amid persistent tensions surrounding the president's stated ambitions Donald Trump concerning the Arctic territory.
Appointed last year to promote a strengthened American presence and control in Greenland, Jeff Landry is due to participate in the "Future Greenland" economic conference, organized on May 19 and 20 in the Greenlandic capital.
Images broadcast by the Danish public broadcaster DR show the American envoy disembarking from a plane in Nuuk. He is accompanied by Kenneth Howery, who is also scheduled to participate in the meetings there.
Washington's stated goal of making Greenland part of the United States continues to provoke strong opposition. The Greenlandic and Danish governments have repeatedly stated that the territory "is not for sale."
The conference organizers, Business Greenland, clarified that they had not officially invited Jeff Landry, while emphasizing that the event remained open to the public and foreign representatives.
According to the US Embassy in Copenhagen, the visit aims to meet "a wide range of Greenlanders" in order to strengthen economic opportunities, people-to-people ties and cooperation between Washington and Greenland.
Greenland has become a major strategic issue due to its location in the Arctic, its natural resources, and the gradual opening of new shipping routes linked to climate change. American ambitions in the region are attracting increasing attention from Western powers, as well as from Russia and China.
