Vice Admiral Olivier Lebas died Wednesday morning in a mountain fall in the Pyrenees. Aged 62, this former naval fighter pilot had distinguished himself in the French Navy through his command of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. The circumstances of the accident have not been specified.
A career between sea and sky
Olivier Lebas held the strategic position of Maritime Prefect of the Atlantic between 2020 and 2023, a role he left to join the Airbus Group. His military career earned him several distinctions, including the rank of Commander of the Legion of Honour, the War Cross for Foreign Theatres of Operations with palm, and the Military Valour Cross with palm and silver star.
After obtaining his engineering degree from the Catholic Institute of Arts and Crafts, he joined the French Navy in September 1987. His career change to the aeronautical industry in 2023 marked a new professional stage, far from the operational responsibilities that had characterized his decades of service.
