The French Bishops' Conference officially announced on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, preparations for a visit by Pope Leo XIV to France. Expected at the end of September, the pontiff is scheduled to stop in Paris and Lourdes. Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline, president of the Conference, is currently coordinating the program for this apostolic journey in conjunction with the apostolic nuncio. Since his election a year ago, Leo XIV has received several requests from French bishops to undertake this trip.

Notre-Dame and Lourdes on the program

A visit to Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris is reportedly on the agenda, although the precise details of the trip are still being finalized. The invitation to the Pope was officially renewed by Cardinal Aveline on behalf of the French episcopate. This trip would take place in a particularly significant context for the Church in France, one year after Leo XIV's accession to the papacy.

The two chosen destinations reflect their symbolic importance for French Catholicism. Paris, the capital and historical seat of the Church in France, and Lourdes, the country's premier Marian pilgrimage site, would thus welcome the successor of Peter for the first time since his election. Church authorities are currently finalizing the last logistical details of this visit.
