The far-left party prefers a single candidate in the face of the threat from the far right. Philippe Poutou will not be a candidate.

The NPA-Anticapitalist announced on Monday that it will not field a candidate in the 2027 presidential election. This branch of the New Anticapitalist Party, which emerged from the movement's split in 2024, announced its decision in an official statement. Philippe Poutou, who represented the party in 2012, 2017, and 2022, will therefore not run again. The party is now prioritizing a strategy of rallying behind Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a key figure in La France Insoumise (France Unbowed).

A union against the far right

This decision stems primarily from a desire to avoid splitting the radical left vote. The NPA-Anticapitalist believes it is necessary to create a unified left-wing candidacy to counter what it calls the threat of the far right. More reformist than the NPA-Revolutionaries, the other branch that emerged from the split and will field its own candidate, the NPA-Anticapitalist counts among its members historical figures such as Philippe Poutou and Olivier Besancenot.

This strategic positioning marks a turning point for a party accustomed to fielding its own candidates. The search for unity around Jean-Luc Mélenchon illustrates the ongoing realignment within the French far left. It remains to be seen whether this approach will actually succeed in uniting a camp that has been divided for years on issues of alliances and electoral strategy.
