Antoine Vermorel-Marques, a member of parliament for the Loire region representing the Republicans (LR) party, has submitted a proposed resolution to create a parliamentary commission of inquiry into fuel pricing. He accuses certain players of having taken advantage of the international situation to artificially inflate their profit margins. He denounces a persistent phenomenon: price increases at the pump occur very quickly when oil prices rise, while price decreases take much longer to reach consumers. This asymmetry fuels his suspicions of speculative practices.

Identify those profiting from the crisis

The commission's objective would be twofold: to identify potential profiteers of the energy crisis and to measure the actual impact of public aid disbursed by the state since the start of the war in the Middle East. The parliamentarian asserts that he has legitimate doubts about the transparency of the pricing chain. According to him, a clear speculative effect occurred at the outset of the crisis, and he now wants to obtain concrete figures to support his accusations. The commission would allow for hearings with stakeholders in the sector and an examination of the pricing mechanisms at each stage of distribution.

This initiative comes amid persistent pressure on the purchasing power of the French. Fuel prices remain a sensitive issue, particularly in rural areas where car dependency remains high. Antoine Vermorel-Marques's request echoes the concerns expressed by many local elected officials regarding the volatility of prices. It remains to be seen whether this proposal will garner the necessary support to lead to the actual creation of a parliamentary commission of inquiry.
