Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, accusing ChatGPT of posing risks to young users. Authorities specifically criticize the chatbot for promoting addictive behaviors and lacking sufficiently effective mechanisms to protect minors.
According to the complaint filed in state court, OpenAI failed in its duty of care by allowing teenagers to access potentially dangerous content. The prosecutor argues that the age verification systems implemented by the company remain inadequate despite the officially stated restrictions for younger users.
Billions of dollars demanded
To support its action, Florida cites several studies and reports highlighting negative effects linked to the intensive use of chatbots, including sleep disturbances, decreased academic performance, and increased social isolation among some teenagers. Research has also demonstrated the ability of some chatbots to provide inappropriate responses on sensitive topics such as self-harm or suicide.
The prosecutor is demanding stronger protections for minors, as well as damages that could reach several billion dollars. James Uthmeier has also called on other US states to join this legal offensive, stating that he wants to make this case a major test of the responsibility of companies developing artificial intelligence systems for the general public.
