Jean-Luc Mélenchon is launching another bid for the Élysée Palace. Invited to the 20 p.m. news on TF1 on Sunday evening, May 3, the former member of parliament for Bouches-du-Rhône announced his fourth candidacy for the 2027 presidential election. The founder of La France Insoumise is thus attempting once again to seize power after his previous attempts in 2012, 2017, and 2022.
A campaign launched in Saint-Denis
As in the last presidential election, the far-left leader has made his candidacy contingent on gathering 150,000 citizen endorsements. This threshold is a mere formality for him, given his ability to mobilize support. Jean-Luc Mélenchon officially launches his campaign this Sunday at a large rally with key figures of his movement, scheduled to take place in Saint-Denis, Seine-Saint-Denis, a traditional stronghold of the radical left.
This new candidacy comes in a political context marked by realignments on the left and the fragmentation of the NFP. At 75 years old at the time of the election, Jean-Luc Mélenchon hopes to once again unite the left-wing electorate after having achieved a score of 22% in the first round in 2022, narrowly missing qualification for the second round.
