Jean Castex rules out a candidacy for the 2027 presidential election

Jean Castex has stated that a candidacy in the 2027 presidential election is not on his political agenda. The former Prime Minister, who now heads the SNCF (French National Railway Company), wanted to clarify his position after some observers mentioned his name among the possible candidates from the centrist bloc. This clarification comes amid much speculation about presidential ambitions within the majority.

A name mentioned in case of a blockage

Jean Castex's name was circulating, in particular, as a fallback option should the candidacies of Édouard Philippe and Gabriel Attal cancel each other out. The two former prime ministers, rising figures in Macronism, are regularly presented as natural successors to Emmanuel Macron. Faced with this possibility of an internal deadlock, some strategists envisioned Castex in a position of arbiter or compromise for the presidential camp.

Despite his firm refusal to consider such a prospect, Jean Castex did not entirely rule out the possibility. He chose not to completely close the door, thus leaving a symbolic margin for maneuver.
