Italy: Meloni ready to review the controversial migrant repatriation bonus plan

The Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni She announced that her government was prepared to amend a controversial bill aimed at providing financial incentives to lawyers involved in the voluntary repatriation of migrants. Despite the criticism, however, she reaffirmed her commitment to the general principle of the scheme.

The bill, which could be adopted by Parliament in the coming days, stipulates that lawyers will only be paid from public funds if return procedures are successful. The stated objective is to encourage voluntary returns in a context of persistent migratory pressure.

This measure has sparked strong opposition in legal circles. Lawyers' and judges' associations believe it could undermine the independence of the defense and create a conflict of interest by linking lawyers' fees to the outcome of proceedings.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella also expressed concerns, having the power to refuse to promulgate the law if he deems it contrary to the Constitution.

The Union of Italian Criminal Chambers denounced a system incompatible with fundamental legal principles, arguing that it would transform lawyers into instruments of the government's migration policies.

Faced with these criticisms, Giorgia Meloni indicated that she was ready to adjust certain aspects of the text in order to address concerns, without abandoning her objective of better regulating the return of migrants.

This debate illustrates the tensions between political imperatives and respect for legal principles, in a context where the management of migration flows remains a major issue for Italy and the European Union.
