Gérald Darmanin continues to leave his presidential ambitions ambiguous. Invited this Wednesday morning on France Inter, the Minister of Justice was questioned by Benjamin Duhamel about a possible candidacy in the 2027 presidential election. With a smile, he replied: "We'll see, God willing! God willing!", a formula that immediately reignited speculation about his political intentions.
During the interview, Gérald Darmanin also stated that the upcoming presidential election would "undoubtedly be the most important in 30 or 40 years." He lamented the current "large number of candidates and not many ideas" on the right, while expressing his desire for a single candidate to emerge in order to avoid a duel between Jordan Bardella and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a scenario he considers "terrible for France."
The minister also addressed his controversial reform of criminal plea bargaining, which was ultimately scaled back in the face of criticism from judges and lawyers. Gérald Darmanin acknowledged that he did not have a majority in the National Assembly to pass the bill in its initial version, stating that he had opted for a compromise by excluding sexual crimes and cases falling under the jurisdiction of the Assize Court.
