The wealth tax on real estate (IFI) continues its upward trend in 2025, with revenues reaching €2,3 billion, an 8% increase year-on-year, according to the French Public Finances Directorate. This rise is mainly due to the growing number of taxpayers affected, which increased from 186,000 to 193,600 households in one year.
In detail, this increase is primarily due to the broadening of the tax base, although the rise in average household wealth also plays a more limited role. Households subject to this tax have high average incomes, around €322,100 annually, and bear a significant tax burden, paying over €60,000 in taxes on average.
This growth in the IFI (French wealth tax) comes at a time when wealth taxation remains a sensitive issue. The increase in the number of taxpayers affected directly reflects the impact of rising property prices, which pushes more households above the tax threshold of €1,3 million.
