Gérald Darmanin is expected in Algiers this Monday, May 18, for a one-day mission focused on restoring judicial relations between France and Algeria. This unprecedented visit is part of the French government's strategy of diplomatic rapprochement with Algiers. The Minister of Justice will be accompanied by Pascal Prache, the National Financial Prosecutor, a sign that financial and criminal cases are central to these discussions.
Three sensitive cases on the table
Several sensitive topics are on the agenda for this meeting with Darmanin's Algerian counterpart. Cooperation in the fight against the Algerian Mafia is a priority, as is the issue of ill-gotten gains. The fate of French journalist Christophe Gleizes, sentenced to seven years in prison for condoning terrorism by the Algerian courts, will also be discussed. Although the Ministry of Justice remains discreet, there is hope for his release, even though no meeting between Darmanin and the detainee is scheduled.
A visit followed by a reciprocal visit
This visit should pave the way for reciprocity. Laurent Nuñez announced that the Algerian Minister of the Interior will travel to Paris in a few days. French authorities also hope to make progress on the issue of deportation orders for Algerian nationals. These bilateral exchanges mark a new stage in the normalization of relations between the two countries after several years of tension.
