On Tuesday, a court ordered François Asselineau to stand trial in Paris. The president of the Popular Republican Union, who officially launched his presidential campaign at the end of March, is being prosecuted for sexual harassment and sexual assault of one staff member, as well as attempted sexual assault of another. This decision follows a turbulent legal battle that has lasted several years.
The dismissal was overturned on appeal.
François Asselineau was indicted in this case in 2021. Three years later, in December 2024, he was granted a dismissal by the investigating judges. However, the public prosecutor's office, contesting this decision, appealed. The investigating chamber of the Paris Court of Appeal ruled in its favor on April 7, overturning the dismissal order. This reversal now paves the way for a criminal trial for the political leader.
The 67-year-old politician will therefore have to appear before the Paris criminal court. The charges concern two of his associates within his party. No hearing date has yet been announced by the court. This legal case comes in the midst of preparations for the next presidential election, in which François Asselineau intends to run for the third time after 2017 and 2022.
