Two French hackers, aged 15 and 22, were formally charged on Thursday for their alleged involvement in a vast cyberattack campaign orchestrated by the Dumpsec group. According to the French anti-cybercrime unit, tens of millions of personal data records were stolen during these operations, which targeted more than 1.500 French companies and organizations. Among the victims were the National Assembly, several Ministry of Education websites, the home improvement retailer Leroy Merlin, sports federations, and medical platforms.
Seven other arrests have already been made.
These two arrests are part of a larger operation conducted by French authorities. Between June 8 and 14, the anti-cybercrime unit had already arrested seven other suspected hackers linked to the same group. This series of raids demonstrates the mobilization of specialized services in response to the scale of attacks against sensitive state and private sector infrastructure.
The indictment of these two young men illustrates the legal reality awaiting perpetrators of cyberattacks, regardless of their age. While some may have believed they had accomplished a simple technical feat, they now face prosecution for the massive theft of sensitive data concerning millions of French citizens. The investigation continues to determine the exact extent of their involvement and to identify any potential accomplices within the Dumpsec network.
