The situation is becoming increasingly tense regarding drinking water. More than 40,000 people are currently experiencing water outages, announced Minister for Ecological Transition Monique Barbut on Wednesday. This announcement comes as Météo-France has placed 78 departments on orange alert for extreme heat for the day. The high temperatures are exacerbating the pressure on already fragile water resources in several regions of the country.
Prefects urged to strengthen restrictions
On Wednesday, Monique Barbut issued a firm directive to the prefects, asking them to quickly implement the necessary water restriction orders in their respective territories. The minister particularly emphasized the importance of monitoring compliance with these measures, an aspect often neglected during previous droughts. State services will be responsible for verifying that the usage restrictions are being properly applied by both individuals and businesses.
The geographical scope of the heatwave warning underscores the national dimension of this weather event. The 78 affected departments cover a large part of the country, from south to north. Authorities fear that the combination of intense heat and a lack of rainfall will further worsen groundwater and river levels in the coming days.
