The Nosoli group, owner of the Furet du Nord and Decitre bookstore chains, announced on Tuesday its intention to file for receivership in order to ensure the continuation of its operations in a very difficult economic climate. The proceedings are scheduled to begin on June 1st before the Lille Métropole Commercial Court.
The company, which employs approximately 600 people and operates 27 bookstores in France, states that it intends to use this legal framework to accelerate its transformation and preserve jobs. The group cites, in particular, a sharp decline in the cultural goods market, marked by a significant drop in sales over several years and increasingly narrow profit margins.
The bookstore sector is under pressure
Nosoli explains that it has already begun reorganizing its operations, diversifying into games, stationery, and creative hobbies, as well as strengthening its digital presence and services for professionals. However, the faster-than-expected decline in consumer spending since the beginning of the year is believed to have precipitated the filing for receivership.
Despite this situation, the Furet du Nord and Decitre chains assure that their stores will continue to operate normally during the proceedings. The group, which generated €150 million in revenue in 2025, joins a growing list of booksellers facing difficulties in a market heavily impacted by online retail and declining print book reading.
