HSBC posted a net profit of $14,6 billion in the first half of 2026, a 27% year-on-year increase. Its pre-tax profit also rose, by 23%, to $19,5 billion. The bank attributes this improvement to higher interest income and increased fee income.

Based on these results, the British group plans to repurchase up to $1 billion of its own shares before the release of its third-quarter results. Its board of directors also approved the payment of a second interim dividend of $0,10 per share.

Significant losses lie behind record results

HSBC is resuming its share buybacks after suspending them as part of its planned full acquisition of Hang Seng Bank. This operation generally reduces the number of shares outstanding and can support their value, while also distributing some of the available capital to shareholders.

The results, however, remain marked by $2,4 billion in expected credit losses, $400 million more than a year earlier. HSBC also recorded a $400 million loss related to a fraud case involving a British investor, as well as a $200 million loss in Hong Kong commercial real estate. The bank is therefore continuing its global restructuring and the sale of several businesses in order to focus its resources on its most profitable markets.
