United Arab Emirates: DP World is preparing a new port to bypass the Strait of Hormuz

The Emirati port operator DP World plans to build a new port and container terminal on the east coast of the United Arab Emirates to reduce its reliance on the port of Jebel Ali and secure its trade routes. The Financial Times reported the news, citing sources close to the matter.

The project envisions the development of a multi-purpose port in the Emirate of Fujairah, located on the Gulf of Oman, as well as the creation of a new terminal within the existing port. This location would allow ships direct access to the Indian Ocean without having to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic passage regularly exposed to geopolitical tensions.

A strategic issue for regional trade

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's main shipping lanes for the transport of hydrocarbons and goods. By developing infrastructure on the eastern coast of the United Arab Emirates, DP World seeks to strengthen the resilience of its supply chain against the risks of disruption in this sensitive area.

According to the Financial Times, discussions surrounding this project are still ongoing. Neither DP World nor the Emirati authorities have, at this stage, officially commented on the timeline or the amount of the planned investments.
