EasyJet weighed down by tensions in the Middle East, losses soaring

British airline EasyJet anticipates a sharp increase in losses for the first half of the year, penalized in particular by the consequences of the war in the Middle East. For this traditionally loss-making period, the group forecasts a pre-tax loss of between £540 million and £560 million, compared to £394 million a year earlier.

Despite what was considered solid demand, the financial situation deteriorated due to rising costs, particularly fuel costs. Escalating geopolitical tensions led to higher oil prices, generating approximately £25 million in additional expenses for the company in March.

Visibility weakened

EasyJet also highlights an indirect impact of the conflict on customer behavior, with customers now booking their flights later. This trend reduces the group's commercial visibility, which is already facing increased competition in several markets.

Despite this challenging environment, the company highlights strong operational performance, particularly during the Easter period, and expresses confidence for the summer season. It believes it can navigate the current uncertainties while preparing for the release of its full results scheduled for May 21.
