The Bahraini group Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) has confirmed the acquisition of Aluminium Dunkerque for approximately $2,2 billion. The agreement, signed on the sidelines of the Choose France summit, marks one of the most significant industrial deals of the year in the strategic metals sector.
The deal also includes Bpifrance acquiring a stake in the company. The public investment bank will contribute €100 million and hold a 6% minority stake, along with a seat on the board of directors of the holding company that controls Aluminium Dunkerque. This presence has been welcomed by employee representatives as a sign of French industrial sovereignty.
A commitment to employment and the industrial future of the site
Formerly a flagship of the Pechiney group, Aluminium Dunkerque operates the largest primary aluminum production site in France, located in northern France. The plant produces approximately 300.000 tons of aluminum per year and employs nearly 750 people. The site had been owned by the American investment fund American Industrial Partners since 2021.
Alba assures that this acquisition will have no impact on employment and is part of a long-term industrial strategy. The group, which already produces 1,6 million tons of aluminum per year, considers this operation a major step in its international development and its desire to strengthen its presence in the European market.
