The Greens presented on Monday, July 13, the program that will serve as the basis for the presidential campaign of their candidate, Marine Tondelier. Developed after ten months of consultations that gathered nearly 50,000 contributions, this project aims to propose a profound transformation of French institutions centered on the creation of a "First Ecological and Citizen Republic".
The party aims, in particular, to end what it calls "presidentialism," strengthen the independence of the judiciary, and enshrine new principles in the Constitution. The Greens assert their commitment to defending the rule of law, which they believe is weakened, and promoting a more democratic and participatory institutional structure. Several of these proposals echo institutional reforms already advocated by other left-wing parties.
Green taxation and economic reform at the heart of the project
On the economic front, the program emphasizes "ecological prosperity," reconciling environmental protection with social justice. The Greens propose an evolution of the economic model to accelerate the ecological transition while preserving the purchasing power of the middle and working classes. They do, however, distinguish between wealthier households, whom they believe should contribute more to this effort.
Key measures include the creation of a "climate wealth tax," a green VAT, and a reform of transport taxation aimed at increasing the cost of air travel while favoring rail. The party also reaffirms its commitment to stronger European integration, notably through the creation of a High Military Council attached to the European Council.
A strategy still under discussion
The program is unveiled amidst divisions on the left. The plan for a joint primary without La France Insoumise failed, and Socialist activists opted for a primary reserved for their allies. The Greens are now continuing their deliberations on the strategy to adopt for the presidential election.
In early July, party members had already given their approval in principle to an independent candidacy for their leader. This platform now forms the political foundation upon which Marine Tondelier intends to build her campaign for the 2027 presidential election.
