Gabriel Attal officially announces his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election

Gabriel Attal announced his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election on Friday during a visit to Mur-de-Barrez. The 37-year-old former Prime Minister confirmed his entry into the race before several hundred people gathered in this town in the Aveyron region, after several weeks of travel and public appearances across France.

In his speech, Gabriel Attal made numerous references to French history, culture, and identity, asserting that France remained, in his view, "the country of the future." The former head of government also began to outline several policy priorities, particularly regarding pensions and access to healthcare.

A battle is breaking out within the central bloc

Gabriel Attal has notably advocated for abolishing the legal retirement age, preferring a system based more on contribution periods and employee freedom of choice. This position marks one of the first major proposals of his upcoming presidential campaign.

His candidacy comes at a time when some members of the presidential majority have been pushing for him to emerge as a central figure in the Macronist camp for several months, following the announced departure of...Emmanuel MacronSeveral local officials, including Renaud Muselier and Thomas Cazenave, had recently publicly called for his candidacy.

A rivalry now openly erupts within the presidential camp.

Gabriel Attal's announcement now opens a direct competition with Édouard Philippe for the leadership of the central bloc in view of 2027. The former Prime Minister from Le Havre, already a declared candidate since 2024, appears so far as one of the main figures of the presidential camp in opinion polls.
