Already a declared candidate for the 2027 presidential election, Édouard Philippe refuses to approach his campaign from the perspective of a break with Emmanuel Macron. In an interview with La Tribune DimancheThe former Prime Minister believes that the challenge for the future head of state will be above all to act and to continue the reforms deemed effective for the country.
The president of the Horizons party is claiming credit for several policies initiated during his time as government leader between 2017 and 2020, particularly regarding employment, apprenticeships, reindustrialization, and deficit reduction. He also asserts that he is continuing a broader approach to national defense and European integration.
A difference in the exercise of power
While acknowledging some of the Macron legacy, Édouard Philippe nevertheless emphasizes his desire to exercise the presidential function differently. According to him, successive heads of state have tended to want to govern as much as to preside, a conception of institutions from which he distances himself. He presents himself as an independent political leader, capable of standing by his record while proposing changes.
With less than a year to go before the official start of the campaign, the former mayor of Le Havre is calling for a broad coalition of the right and center. Confident in his ability to unite his camp, he believes that the various candidates from the center bloc and the republican right will have to rally behind the one who emerges as the strongest contender. His first major presidential rally is scheduled for July 5th in Paris.
