South Africa's main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), announced on Saturday that its former leader, Helen Zille, would be its candidate for mayor of Johannesburg in local elections scheduled for next year.
Zille, 74, is considered one of the party's key strategists. She played a key role in the 2024 national elections, which saw the African National Congress (ANC) lose its absolute majority for the first time since the end of apartheid, paving the way for a power-sharing election with the DA and several smaller parties.
By running Zille, the DA intends to capitalize on its experience and influence to try to regain control of South Africa's largest city, a major political issue in the national landscape.
Johannesburg, which faces significant challenges in governance, security, and public services, is at the heart of the political battle between the ANC and the DA. Zille's candidacy could give the opposition renewed momentum amid growing discontent with the ruling party.
