As the start of the 2026 school year approaches, the rules for awarding the back-to-school allowance are changing slightly. This aid, intended to support low-income households with expenses related to the schooling of children and teenagers, remains means-tested, with the income thresholds being raised.
For 2026, the income thresholds have been increased. A household with one child must not exceed €28.956 in annual income to be eligible for assistance. This ceiling increases progressively according to family composition and rises to €35.638 for two children, €42.320 for three, and then €49.002 for four children, with an additional allowance for each additional child.
Amounts adjusted according to the children's age
The amount of the allowance always depends on the child's age at the start of the school year. Families will receive just over €423 for a child in primary school, nearly €447 for a middle school student, and approximately €462 for a high school student. When income slightly exceeds the limits, a reduced allowance may be granted, calculated on a case-by-case basis.
Payment remains automatic for children aged 6 to 15, with no specific action required for those already registered with the CAF (Family Allowance Fund). Specific rules continue to apply in certain areas, such as... Mayotte, as well as for children placed by court order, for whom the funds are held in escrow.
