A new mathematics institute will be created at École Polytechnique thanks to a €50 million donation from Bernard Arnault, head of the LVMH group, the institution announced in a statement released Thursday. This contribution, described as "historic," is intended to strengthen fundamental research in France.
The project envisions the construction of a building on the Palaiseau campus by 2030, designed to house top-level international researchers. It will be accompanied by the launch of a scientific program called "The Mathematical Residency," starting this fall.
Funding that reignites the debate
While the school's administration welcomes this significant support for research, this type of private funding raises questions. The Director General of Polytechnique emphasized that these contributions are essential for carrying out ambitious projects, while acknowledging the existence of criticism within the academic community.
Student voices and groups are denouncing the growing influence of economic actors on higher education. During a recent ceremony, a symbolic action challenged these partnerships, accusing them of serving private interests at the expense of research independence.
