Drought: the FNSEA calls for a multi-billion euro aid package

The president of the FNSEA, Arnaud Rousseau, is asking the government to specify the amount of its aid package for farmers affected by drought, heatwaves, and fires. The agricultural union estimates that several billion euros will be needed to protect the most vulnerable farms.

The government is preparing a support plan for "Heatwaves, Droughts, and Fires." It is expected to include cash flow assistance, social security contribution relief, administrative exemptions, and measures to facilitate the resumption of production. Its financial allocation has not yet been announced.

Emergency aid demanded

The losses particularly affect livestock farms facing a shortage of fodder, as well as corn and sunflower producers whose yields are expected to decline sharply. The French corn harvest is expected to be its lowest level since 1980. Some farms may also encounter difficulties financing planting and the next agricultural season.

A more precise assessment of the damage is expected at the end of August. The FNSEA, however, is calling for the swift disbursement of aid to the hardest-hit areas. A meeting between agricultural representatives and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is scheduled for early September.
