French companies plan to recruit less in 2026, with a 6,5% drop in hiring intentions compared to the previous year, according to a survey published Tuesday by France Travail.
The total number of recruitment projects stands at 2,27 million, down 158.000 year-on-year and at its lowest level since 2018. This decrease affects all sectors, with a particularly marked decline in construction (-16,4%) and, to a lesser extent, in business services (-10,1%).
Increased activity remains the main driver of hiring.
Nearly 40,7% of planned recruitments are linked to a temporary need for activity, far ahead of replacing employees permanently leaving their positions (25,8%). The share of permanent contracts is also decreasing, with 41% of planned hires being permanent contracts compared to 43,8% in 2025, while short-term contracts are increasing.
The proportion of companies planning to recruit has fallen slightly to 23,3%, compared to 24,1% last year. At the same time, recruitment difficulties have eased, dropping to 43,8% of planned recruitment efforts, particularly in several industrial and financial sectors. However, significant needs remain in seasonal jobs, especially in the restaurant and agricultural industries.
