Norway is moving closer to France's nuclear strategy in Europe

Norway has announced it will join the "advanced deterrence" framework proposed by France to several European partners. This decision was formalized on Wednesday by Emmanuel Macron during the visit to Paris of Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

The French president is thus continuing his initiative to strengthen the role of French nuclear deterrence in the security of the European continent, in a context marked by geopolitical tensions and the war in Ukraine. Oslo joins a dialogue already underway with several European allies, including Germany, Poland, and the United Kingdom.

Paris wants to strengthen European security

Faced with the Russian threat and questions about the evolution of American involvement in Europe, France is seeking to consolidate a more autonomous defense architecture within the continent. For several years, Emmanuel Macron has advocated for a European discussion on France's nuclear force.

The Norwegian Prime Minister confirmed that his country wishes to participate in this strategic cooperation with other Nordic and European partners. This development marks a significant rapprochement between Paris and Oslo on security issues, while Norway has historically remained very committed to the NATO framework.
