Civil service: 862.000 employees will receive compensation following the minimum wage increase

The automatic 2,41% increase in the minimum wage (SMIC) on June 1st will have direct consequences for some public sector employees. According to the Ministry of Public Accounts, nearly 862.000 civil servants will receive a differential allowance designed to ensure that no employee receives a base salary lower than the minimum wage.

This measure primarily concerns 306.000 state civil servants, as well as staff in local and hospital public services. The amount of this allowance can reach up to €65,28 gross per month, depending on individual circumstances.

The unions are demanding a broader pay increase

The measure aims to offset the automatic increase in the minimum wage (SMIC), driven by the return of inflation. It applies to the basic salary index, without taking into account bonuses and other salary supplements received by the employees concerned.

However, unions believe this measure remains insufficient to address the challenges of attracting civil servants. They are calling, in particular, for an increase in the index point value, which serves as the basis for calculating civil servants' salaries. According to the CFDT union, nearly 60.000 positions remain vacant across the three branches of the civil service, a shortage partly attributed to salaries deemed unattractive.
