Venezuelan authorities have begun discussions with several international industrial groups to modernize an electrical grid weakened by years of deterioration and underinvestment. Siemens and General Electric are among the companies approached to contribute to an infrastructure rehabilitation plan.
Technical teams recently visited the site to examine the condition of the facilities, particularly the large hydroelectric dams that provide the bulk of the country's electricity production. These initial assessments highlight aging equipment and significantly reduced capacity, requiring urgent intervention.
A network weakened for years
The discussions focus on turbine repairs, modernizing control systems, and strengthening the distribution network. The goal is to improve the reliability of the electricity supply, as power outages remain frequent in several regions of the country.
This project comes amid a persistent energy crisis, exacerbated by Venezuela's dependence on hydroelectric power and the lack of infrastructure maintenance. Authorities now hope to mobilize significant investments to sustainably stabilize the system and meet domestic demand.
