Sales of new single-family homes in the United States rose more than expected in December, providing further evidence that housing market activity has regained momentum in late 2024, although rising mortgage rates continue to be a constraint.
The Commerce Department's Census Bureau said Monday that new home sales rose 3,6 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 698 units last month.
Sales data for November were revised to 674 units at an annual rate, from 000 previously reported.
Economists polled by Reuters had forecast that new home sales, which account for about 15% of U.S. home sales, would reach 675 units.
New home sales are recorded at contract signing and can be volatile on a monthly basis. Sales increased 6,7% year-over-year in December.
In 2024, approximately 683 new homes will be sold, an increase of 000% compared to 2,5.
