Storm Nils: a second death and 450,000 homes still without power

Storm Nils has claimed a second victim in France, government spokesperson Maud Bregeon announced Friday morning. The death occurred in Tarn-et-Garonne: according to initial reports, the person was on a ladder in their garden at the time of the tragedy, though no further details were provided.

On Thursday, the first death had already been recorded in the Landes region: a 55-year-old truck driver was killed after a branch pierced his windshield. The provisional toll also includes five serious injuries and 21 minor injuries, in a storm that triggered approximately 4,500 emergency responses.

After the winds, the threat of floods

On a practical level, the situation remains significant: Enedis indicated on Friday morning that 450,000 homes were still without power, primarily in Nouvelle-Aquitaine (292,000) and Occitanie (153,000). The operator claims to have already restored power to half of the 900,000 customers initially affected, with 3,000 people mobilized.

While Storm Nils is no longer directly impacting the country in terms of winds, the flood situation remains critical. Gironde and Lot-et-Garonne remain under red alert, with the Garonne River being closely monitored: Vigicrues warns that water levels are expected to rise further and that significant flooding is anticipated, particularly in the Marmande and Gironde sections.
