Kaylee Hottle, known worldwide for her role as Jia in Godzilla vs. Kong et Godzilla x Kong: The New EmpireShe died at only 18 years old. The young American actress succumbed to her injuries after a car accident that occurred on the night of Monday, July 20th to Tuesday, July 21st, in Maryland, USA. Her death was confirmed by her father, her school, and local authorities.

The accident occurred around 2:52 a.m. on Windsor Road in Ijamsville, Frederick County. Kaylee Hottle was a passenger in a 1995 Honda Accord driven by a 19-year-old man. A third person was also in the vehicle. According to initial findings, the car left the right side of the two-lane road before striking a culvert, a structure that allows water to flow under the roadway. Investigators believe excessive speed may have contributed to the crash.
Kaylee Hottle transported to a trauma center
The actress, seriously injured, was transported to a specialized center, where she was later pronounced dead. She was the only occupant of the car to lose her life. The driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The second passenger refused medical attention at the scene. The accident remains under investigation, and no arrests or charges were announced in the initial hours following the tragedy.

Joshua Hottle, the young actress's father, announced her death in a video posted on Facebook. Himself deaf, he spoke in American Sign Language as he prepared to leave Texas for Maryland. "I'm taking a flight I never wanted to take."he wrote alongside the video. He then posted older footage of his daughter performing a song in sign language, with this message: "She sang that song beautifully. We will miss her terribly."

Kaylee Hottle became known in 2021 thanks to Godzilla vs. Kong, directed by Adam Wingard. She played Jia, a young deaf orphan living on Skull Island and placed under the protection of scientist Ilene Andrews, played by Rebecca Hall.
Jia develops an exceptional relationship with Kong, with whom she communicates in sign language. The character reveals a more sensitive side of the gigantic primate and plays a vital role in the relationship between humans and Titans.
Kaylee Hottle had reprised this role in 2024 in Godzilla x Kong: The New EmpireHis character, now living with Ilene Andrews, once again accompanies Kong on his journey to the Hollow Earth. His performance earned him a Saturn Award nomination for Best Young Performer.
A deaf actress from an entirely deaf family
Originally from Georgia and now living in Texas, Kaylee Hottle was born deaf. Her family has several generations of deaf people on her father's side, and both her parents are also deaf. American Sign Language was her first language. Before acting, she appeared in several commercials and videos aimed at deaf and hard-of-hearing people. She also had a guest role in an episode of the series Magnum PIHer work on the MonsterVerse films had allowed a very young deaf actress to land a significant role in two very high-budget Hollywood productions. To facilitate communication during filming Godzilla vs. KongRebecca Hall and Alexander Skarsgård had learned elements of sign language in order to communicate directly with her. Kaylee Hottle had regularly advocated for greater representation of deaf people both in front of and behind the cameras. “We can do a lot of things. We just can’t hear. We need more deaf actresses and deaf technicians in this industry.”she explained.

Kaylee Hottle was still a student at the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin, where she was about to begin her senior year of high school. The school announced her disappearance with a "deep sadness" and asked that his family's privacy be respected. "Our thoughts are with Kaylee's family, friends, classmates, and all who knew and loved her during this extremely difficult time."the school wrote, referring to an immense loss for its entire community.
